The CUBIE, now available internationally, is designed by Filipe Lisboa for Canadian design and manufacturing house, VISO Inc. Following a soft launch in Toronto last May, the CUBIE light fixtures already illuminate bold spaces in some of world’s most stylish properties.
CUBIE is a suspension decorative light fixture made of solid crystal. “Each piece is hand-molded and never the same as the next”, states Lisboa, “the intention was to achieve organic nature in both substance and form”.
The CUBIE is fashioned entirely from crystal, and tinted with VISO’s signature metallization process. Lisboa and his team, spent a year developing the product to achieve a unique design and light dispersion. He explains that his initial inspiration came from “nature’s gift to shape light into form”. The unique property of crystal produces pockets of air during the molding process. These pockets naturally deviate light, forcing it to dance within the crystal form.
In installations, the quantity of CUBIEs used in various configured clusters, multiplies light reflection through the air pockets – posing a dramatic influence on atmosphere. “The effect can range from sparkling jewels and flickering tea lights to a constellation of ice cubes. The result is as customized and distinctive as the physical space that inspires it,” Lisboa asserts.
One of the collection’s technical advantages is an automated suspension system, which supports the weight of each light – approximately 5lbs – with an adjustable gripper. “A fixture this heavy would normally demand two aircraft cables: eliminating this cumbersome requirement translates into a clean design that is easy to install and adjust,” adds Lisboa.
Available in three colors, Amber, Clear and Smoke, CUBIE measures no more than 5 ½” wide. Custom drops and clusters are also available upon request.
