Remember how Noah’s Ark saved all the animals from a tremendous flood? Recently, our research team at VISO came across an exciting new rendering of a project by Alexander Remizov, an architect at Remistudio, called the “The Ark.” Remizov designed the project to be able to withstand adverse weather conditions and to be constructed quickly. In essence, Remizov’s ideas for a nomadic-like hotel residence co-relates to the Biblical account of Noah’s Ark.
Remizov describes the building as an “independent bioclimatic building.” The design was conceived, in large part, due to his involvement with the International Union of Architects (UIA) program: Architecture for Disaster Relief. The building can rest on land and on water depending on the need. The building’s shape is a shell inside which all the functions are supported independently from an outside infrastructure.
Remizov presented for TED about his innovative ideas. The structure was inspired by a slinky, the child’s popular toy. Metal clips that double as photovoltaic solar collectors help to connect the ETFE skin to the rib supports. The metal collectors in turn produce enough electricity for the entire building. There are numerous other innovative technologies integral to The Ark.
The efficient structure is designed to be constructed quickly, on land or sea, anywhere regardless of utilities and infrastructure, can withstand many levels of natural disasters, and even has a greenhouse located within in order to provide fresh air and a kind of protected nature for its inhabitants.
At the heart of Remizov’s design is eco-friendly construction. He believes, like many of us, that global warming is imminent where polar icecaps are melting and then causing an increase in sea levels. The Ark has zero emissions, uses zero energy from other sources, and produces zero waste. Remizov believes that cities are turning more toward circular and closed systems. The Ark is, therefore, autonomous.
The technologies are certainly innovative while this project is still in its theoretical stages. We definitely look forward to the construction of a project like this as it has great potential to change our future. At the very least, Remizov and Remistudio have sparked a renewed desire to build on and within the water.
