GREEN WALLS: HANGING GARDEN OF BABYLON

GREEN WALLS: HANGING GARDEN OF BABYLON

Most walls are static, solid, sturdy, linear, and predictable. Then, take a continuous structural wall, attach a steel grid system six inches out, drape a geotextile fabric onto the grid, and fill in the cloth with hydroponic plants. Voila, we now have sensuous green walls that exhibits all the beauty of nature, flows with the breezes, improves the human psyche, and even cleanses the air on a maximum level. Go one step further and imagine that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon must have had vertical garden features such as a living wall. How else would this ancient wonder have made such a bold place in history?

Being Green: The Importance Of Upholding Corporate Responsibility

Living walls are vastly gaining popularity. Think about a tiny urban backyard or an indoor space with stagnant air. In both cases, the vertical living wall provides aesthetics and sustainability. Interestingly restaurants, such as the Tori Tori Restaurant in Mexico, install living walls to enhance the dining experience and to cleanse the air from stray aromas. As the plants go through photosynthesis, they purify the air. In fact, when some indoor architectural finish materials are off-gassing fumes that are harmful to your health, the living wall works in direct opposition to cleanse the air.

Living walls do not follow the catchphrase one-size-fits-all. In fact, each living wall must be custom-designed for every site. First of all, the grid and geotextile fabric must be selected to work well with the structural wall upon which it will be installed. Secondly, the type of containers that will hold the plants needs to be selected. Thirdly, a plan for natural sunlight and a regularly-set misting system need to be designed specifically for the climate and environment. Even more, the types of plants then need to be selected so that they can grow continuously. The new feature wall is then not-so-linear, ever-changing, and breathing life into our spaces.
