Underwater Tennis Render in Dubai Makes an Appearance

Don’t tell the Polish architect Krzysztof Kotala, owner of 8 + 8 Concept Studio in Warsaw that he can’t do anything. For right now, he is attempting to gain enough financial support to make his dream of an underwater tennis match court constructed off the coast of Dubai. His renderings are gorgeous and must, in fact, invoke a great deal of emotional favor when we see a variety of marine life swimming over and above the tennis match. Would the spectators be watching the court or the ceiling?

Several highly-reputed British engineers refute his plans with many multiple reasons why this concept is impossible technically as well as financially. It is obvious that the task at hand would be incredibly difficult. But, there have been many other such engineering feats that people thought were impossible. For example, let’s consider the Eiffel Tower in Paris or perhaps the Titanic. In the Middle Ages, it is estimated that over half of the stone cathedrals erected just collapsed down on themselves.

Attempting the impossible is risky. Either the experiment will work, or it might fail miserably. But, if we never have the ability to be a dreamer, we will be a most depressing society. If it had not been for the centuries of trial and error with stone building, the most famous gothic cathedral, Chartes, would not be here to grace us with its presence today.

Apparently, Kotola needs to figure out how he can manufacture single pieces of glass that are arched and are larger than any we have now on the market. He will also need to figure out how to seal each joint between the pieces of glass. Perhaps most importantly, human safety evacuation plans will need to be set in order. Protecting the structure from boats and anchors above will also be necessary. The list goes on and on. Again, if we cannot dream and face uphill engineering challenges, then we will remain unchanged and stagnant.
